The Treasure Ship -- Panama City Beach, Florida --- Pirate Lore

The Golden Hind

Most famous as the first Englishman to sail around the world, Sir Francis Drake was also a pirate! His famous ship, the Golden Hind, is the model upon which The Treasure Ship was designed. The story of Drake and his sturdy ship, the Golden Hind, is a tale of bravery and discovery, with a touch of pirate's plunder! Sir Francis Drake was born in 1543 near Tavistock in Devonshire, England. Early in his life, he expressed an interest in the sea and worked as a sailor while still a boy. His first long voyage was at the age of 20 when he sailed to Guinea, on the west coast of Africa in a slave transporter with his cousin, Sir John Hawkins. It was during his adventures with Hawkins that he developed his lifelong hatred for the Spanish. He saw first hand the wrath of the Spaniards, when his ship was attacked and many of his crew killed.
The Treasure Ship Restaurant -- Sir Francis DrakeUpon his return to England, he sought and obtained a pirateering commission from Queen Elizabeth that gave him official license to steal from the King of Spain. His first major venture as a pirate was an attack upon the Spanish held city of Panama (No, not Panama City, Florida, but our sister city, Panama City, Panama in Central America).
The attack was hugely successful, and this first pirate's loot formed the basis of Drake's personal fortune. While in Panama, Drake got his first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean, whereupon he loudly begged God to grant him one wish... to one day sail the Pacific in an English ship.

Drake's prayer was answered, when, in 1577, he sailed from England with five ships. Although Drake had announced the venture as a trading expedition to the Nile, soon after reaching Africa, the true destination was revealed to be the Pacific Ocean via the Strait of Magellan.

His journey down the Atlantic South American coast was marred by storms, separations, dissension and at least one fatal run-in with natives.
